Satemwa Estate Dark Tea is a post-fermented dark tea like the Dark and Pu-er teas from China. The garden is located in the Thyolo District in the southern Shire Highlands and was established in 1923 at an elevation about 3,300 feet to grow both tea and coffee in the temperate climate. It is one of the few remaining family-owned tea gardens in the area, as most gardens have been sold to larger companies looking to produce commodity tea. This garden produces artisanal teas derived from experiments with the local cultivars of the tea plant that have been developed here over the decades - Bvumbwe, Thyolo and Zomba.
This unique experimental tea is produced in limited quantities using small leaves that have been pile fermented similar to that of Shou Pu-er. The leaves yield a clean tasting, smooth, rich, and balanced, medium- to full-bodied infusion with deep notes of earth, wood, and beets, and a mild spice and sweetness.
